That is a 2 axled, trailer that has a smaller dump box on it. You dump the main dump box on the dump truck, then there is a process to slide the smaller box right inside the box of your trucks dump, and you then dump it.

Then the small box is returned to it's trailer and the unit goes on it's way. They have never caught on outside of the west coast, and I am not sure if they are used in your area or not. If that's not it, then it could be just a term someone is using to describe whatever they want to have the drivers do. BurkyNov 13, Nov 13, 3. I wonder if by transfer driver they mean the ones that haul trash out of the transfer stations?

Nov 13, 4. That's possible, but the comment that they can use class A or B, tends to make me think it involves straight trucks, and they rarely haul waste from transfer stations in straight trucks, preferring about 48' disposal trailers. But a dump would come in on a B license, even with the trailer behind it.

Tips on operating transfer dumps

Nov 14, 5. A transfer truck is a dump truck setup. It consists of a standard 10 wheel dump truck and a trailer. The trailer has a long tongue and slightly smaller box on it than the straight truck.

When you arrive at the drop sight the trailer is unhooked and the driver then dumps the contents of the truck. Once the truck box is empty the driver then backs up to the trailer box and transfers the box off the trailer via rollers into the truck box, locks it into place and then dumps the trailer box contents. This set up allows for getting around easily in tight areas, delivering different products to the areas with one truck, or making two different deliveries to two areas with one truck.

I now live in NC, but lived in PHX for twenty years and spent about 5 of them driving a transfer dump truck around that town. Although the job you were reading about wasn't that kind of transfer driver, I thought I would at least follow up on my previous post and show you what one looks like now that I have enough post to do that, YEAH!

I'm not sure what kind of experience you have if any, but you might want to give All Star Trucking a call. Before you start shopping for dump trucks for sale in Cincinnati, take a look at the differences between these vehicles below.

This information will be invaluable when it comes time to make a purchase…. Many of these rides include one front steering axle and one or, in some cases, two rear axles, allowing the truck to accommodate more weight without compromising its power or capabilities.

In most other trucks, drivers will have to choose between weight and performance. The big difference in these standard dump trucks comes via the smaller wheelbase.

While this impacts how much dirt for example you can fit in the truck bed, it also impacts how the vehicle performs. With the larger alternatives, drivers may have difficulties even maneuvering around sharp corners. What does this inclusion mean? These are essentially transfer dump trucks, but it includes your typical dumping mechanism instead of a dumping-capable trailer. These vehicles are often capable of self-dumping, which can certainly save you some time and effort on the worksite.

This means the vehicle is forced to rely on its own specific hydraulic ram. This type of dump truck certainly earns its name. Thanks to this inclusion, the length of the vehicle is improved, and that subsequently has a positive influence on the gross weight the dump truck can haul. Ultimately, this means owners can expect at least a short-ton payload. Thanks to this adjustment which has a dramatic influence on aerodynamicsowners will recognize better drivability.

These types of dump trucks include a three-axle vehicle that pulls a two-axle dumping trailer. Alternatively, owners can opt for the cross-spread style, which disperses your hauled materials evenly while the windrow will group these materials together in the middle. This improves the convenience of grouping your hauled materials together. However, payload on these dump trucks is generally lower than the alternatives, and these vehicles tend to be especially difficult to back up and maneuver especially when compared to the standard semi trailer bottom dump truck.

This allows the operator to pile salt or similar materials and slowly disperse it on the road. These vehicles are a bit different than your standard dump truck, thanks to the inclusion of a front-plow. Meanwhile, a roll-off truck includes a bed that is completely removable from the base of the vehicle. This is especially helpful for those who are looking to transport a dumpster, as it allows you to deliver the unit with ease.

Their products will satisfy your needs, regardless of which type of dump truck you ultimately choose.

A typical dump truck is equipped with an open-box bed, which is hinged at the rear and equipped with hydraulic rams to lift the front, allowing the material in the bed to be deposited "dumped" on the ground behind the truck at the site of delivery. In the UK, Australia and India the term applies to off-road construction plant only, and the road vehicle is known as a tipper lorry UK, Indiatip-trucktip-trailertipper truckor tipper Australia and New Zealand.

The dump truck is thought to have been first conceived in the farms of late 19th century western Europe. Thornycroft developed a steam dust-cart in with a tipper mechanism. Such companies flourished during World War I due to massive wartime demand. August Fruehauf had obtained military contracts for his semi-trailer, invented in and later created the partner vehicle, the semi-truck for use in World War I.

After the war, Fruehauf introduced hydraulics in his trailers. They offered hydraulic lift gates, hydraulic winches and a dump trailer for sales in the early s. Fruehauf became the premier supplier of dump trailers and their famed "bathtub dump" was considered to be the best by heavy haulers, road and mining construction firms. Companies like Galion Buggy Co. Galion and Wood Mfg.

Mawhinney attached a dump box to a flatbed truck in The lifting device was a winch attached to a cable that fed over sheave pulley mounted on a mast behind the cab. The cable was connected to the lower front end of the wooden dump box which was attached by a pivot at the back of the truck frame. The operator turned a crank to raise and lower the box. Today, virtually all dump trucks operate by hydraulics and they come in a variety of configurations each designed to accomplish a specific task in the construction material supply chain.

A standard dump truck is a truck chassis with a dump body mounted to the frame. The bed is raised by a vertical hydraulic ram mounted under the front of the body, or a horizontal hydraulic ram and lever arrangement between the frame rails, and the back of the bed is hinged at the back of the truck. The tailgate can be configured to swing up on top hinges and sometimes also to fold down on lower hinges [10] or it can be configured in the "High Lift Tailgate" format wherein pneumatic rams lift the gate open and up above the dump body.

In the United States most standard dump trucks have one front steering axle and one 4x2 [a] 4-wheeler or two 6x4 6-wheeler rear axles which typically have dual wheels on each side. Tandem rear axles are almost always powered, [b] front steering axles are also sometimes powered 4x4, 6x6. Unpowered axles are sometimes used to support extra weight. European Union heavy trucks often have two steering axles. Dump truck configurations are two, three and four axles.

The four-axle eight wheeler has two steering axles at the front and two powered axles at the rear [13] and is limited to 32 metric tons 35 short tons ; 31 long tons gross weight in most EU countries. The front axle is the steering axle, the rear two axles are powered, and the remaining four are lift axles.

The shorter wheelbase of a standard dump truck often makes it more maneuverable than the higher capacity semi-trailer dump trucks. A semi end dump is a tractor-trailer combination wherein the trailer itself contains the hydraulic hoist. In the US a typical semi end dump has a 3-axle tractor pulling a 2-axle trailer with dual tires, in the EU trailers often have 3 axles and single tires.

The key advantage of a semi end dump is a large payload. A key disadvantage is that they are very unstable when raised in the dumping position limiting their use in many applications where the dumping location is uneven or off level. A transfer dump truck is a standard dump truck pulling a separate trailer with a movable cargo container, which can also be loaded with construction aggregategravelsandasphaltklinkers, snow, wood chips, triple mixetc.

The second aggregate container on the trailer "B" box[17] is powered by an electric motor, a pneumatic motor or a hydraulic line. It rolls on small wheels, riding on rails from the trailer's frame into the empty main dump container "A" box.

This maximizes payload capacity without sacrificing the maneuverability of the standard dump truck. Transfer dump trucks are typically seen in the western United States due to the peculiar weight restrictions on highways there.Skip to Job PostingsSearch Close. Find Trucking Jobs. Feb 22, 1. Been driving a bobtail tanker for a year and just scored a local Class A job. It's for a very semi large company 50 truck fleet in Central California. I'll be starting on super dumps and transfer dump trucks before moving into double pneumatic tankers. I've never operated a dump truck other than driving them around at my last company. I know I'll pick it up but I'm looking for advice on transfer dumps. What's it like to back them?

transfer dump truck

Do you spend a lot of time doing reverse maneuvers? My impression is that you drop the transfer in a safe area with space and return for the second load. Obviously the tight tricky backing would be reserved in the bobtail. Am I on the right page? Not concerned about backing the bobtail bc I've put that thing in some scary places this year on fireroads and steep canyons.

I'm interested in knowing how a transfer pivots and moves vs a semi trailer. All good so far but I attempted to back up the trailer without success. With a semi, I always watched the rear tandems. However, there are two pivot points on this thing! The darn thing kept getting away from me.

I tried backing it like a semi but it was nit working out.Filter 3. Industry Trucks. Category Dump Trucks. Manufacturer Peterbilt. Save Search. Email Alert. Keyword Search.
